Madeline’s speech is 1000% how rich people think with the “um sweety don’t take our drugs if it’s so bad it’s the consumers fault you wanted us to make it we’re not the bad guys” when 1) the whole point is Fortunado is lying about its addictiveness and side effects and 2) we literally have Juno, the character in the story that has the record for taking the highest dosage of that drug ever, say she was given her high dosage while unconscious after an accident. She wasn’t given a choice at all. Like that speech wasn’t for us as the layman’s audience to say “wow we live in a society.” It was for us to see how far Madeline has deluded her self into feeling guilt free
Verna to:
Perry: You sure you wanna use the sprinklers?
Camille: Don’t go see the chimps
Leo: That cat’s not available
Vic: Maybe it’s too soon for human trials
Tamerlane: You should really take a nap
Fredrick: Fuck you
You have GQ, USA Today, and PC Gamer tomorrow.
I noted Mike Flanagan screamed “GAY RIGHTS! BI RIGHTS” on his way out Netflix’s door, but he really did stick his head back in to say, “FUCK AI, FUCK BIG PHARMA, AND FUCK THE CAPITALISM THAT PROPS THEM UP” as well didn’t he?
we are in a media literacy crisis
friendly reminder that characters don’t need to be saints to be entertaining. and telling a story does not mean endorsement. art does not need to be all about morally good people.
IDK if this was meant as hyperbole but it’s literally true:
We are genuinely in a crisis of media literacy, with ever fewer genuinely factual resources available in the style and language used by contemporary audiences.
It may sound condescending, but we genuinely need to remind people, or worse, explain to them for the first time that art is not evidence of real world behaviour.
So, thank you, for this reminder. Genuinely.
You’re correct:
Art does not need to feature exclusively morally pure characters. Art is not proof of the creator’s secret, violent desires.

Across The Spiderverse + Trivia
The thing about the D&D movie which is absolutely genius is that the game mechanics basically insulate them against any of the most frustratingly fun sucking movie criticisms. “But why were the guards looking the wrong way?” Failed their perception check. “Why did the spell stop RIGHT before they would have died” Dropped concentration. It gets to be dumb and fun anyone that TRIES to be the plot hole police gets ever increasingly obscure D&D rulebooks thrown down in front of them and called a fake nerd. There’s NOTHING those type of guys hate more than being a fake nerd. This movie is untouchable.
A man and a woman platonically raising a child together and not falling in love has to be the biggest plotwist in the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie AND my favorite part

“Hold on Millie, we’re doing a Shrek”
